Farm, Food, and Health FIG #3 12/13/2023

This meeting was an open lab for folks to come in and view the hydroponics lab, ask questions, and discuss ways that the lab might be used in potential courses. As it was a busy time and many folks could not attend, please be aware that we will be hosting another open house session in April 2024 for FIG members to visit the hydroponics lab as well as the newly renovated farm.
If you are interested in a class bed to grow for spring 2024, class tour or activity, please contact Emily Agosti or Dr. Caravello directly and we will send you the link.

Farm, Food, and Health FIG Meeting #1 10/16/2023

General updates on farm and programming and hydroponics lab
- Discussions included state of farm
- Availability of educational materials
- How to use farm in classroom/farm tours/ workshops
- Food Day event discussions
- Sharing of new Food resource pamphlet.

General updates on farm and programming and hydroponics lab
- Discussed use of grants and applying for new ones
- Discussed preparation for Food Day October 2024
- Decided to do a movie screening as well as student presentation from various courses related to food and health topics
- Agreed to share Faculty food related research
- Will run tours of farm and lab as well
Next meeting will be on Wednesday, December 13th between 1:30-2:30pm at Hydroponics Lab for tour

- Farm update – renovations, cover crops, were the farm stands
- Food Day update – pictures and discussion of a very successful food day event, we had 168 attendees!
- Discussed interdisciplinary Research Grant program with Mabel
- Discusses Jamaica Bay Resiliency Consortium
- Discussed the Swipe Out Hunger campaign, Shannon and Tanzina are going to join next meeting with them
- Discussed the importance of food preparation and gardening as an intervention to change behavior. We need some actionable steps for spring
- The library will do a food display (books, etc.) in conjunction with the farm’s opening in spring. We can also do a nice food screening in library
- Possibility of connecting with fashion and art for Eco Fest events in spring
